What do Europeans think of Americans?

One example, hopefully not representative on large scale, is the article, “The united states of total paranoia,” by Jeremy Clarkson. Mr. Clarkson is apparently an “elaborate” planner, except that he didn’t plan very well (permits and such). How to react to that? Refer to the locals as inbred, of course:
I know Britain is full […]

The Price of Freedom, For Some

On Thursday I discovered that the younger brother of a colleague, who I’ll call “John,” lost both legs (one above and one below the knee) and the sight of one eye to an Iraqi IED early in 2005. He was a passenger of a vehicle with improvised “hill billy” armor, and also some serious […]

US vs. EU Systems, and Freedom

Recently I’ve on business in a few of the former Yugoslav republics – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Slovenia. They have made amazing progress over the past 15 years, and I plan to do a post on what they’ve become post-Socialism. But a post by Andy Jackson over at the Marmot’s and some of […]

62nd D-Day Anniversary

Please take the time to remember the some 10,000 allied casualties from 6 June 1944, and what they were fighting for. I had the opportunity to be there on the 50th anniversary in 1994, and it is a sight to see. It’s also a good reminder that freedom isn’t free, and that both the […]

‘Day Without an Immigrant’ Obscures the Real Issue

Update: Apparently many business, as predicted, have been affected (although some say all they’ve noticed is less traffic). At any rate, not all immigrants agree with the protests:
Meanwhile, a coalition of Hispanic-American groups held a news conference in Washington to stress that the protesters do not represent all immigrants. “We understand the […]

Europe, the death penalty, North Korea, and enlightenment

Felix G. Rohatyn, U.S. Ambassador to France from 1997 to 2001, offers his view in the IHT opinion piece, Executions in America: Dead to the world, that the death penalty – viewed by our enlightened cousins as “a throwback to the Middle Ages” – in America hampers our ability to secure agreements on unrelated […]

An alternate point of view; nukes for all

Unfortunately this is a fairly consistent line of thinking in much of the Muslim world, and applies many of the same arguments that the DPRK employs. I won’t take the time to write any rebuttal; logic doesn’t seem to dent these sorts of arguments.
