A Mexican Senate committee passed a measure Wednesday urging President Felipe Calderon to send a diplomatic note to the United States protesting the deportation of an illegal migrant who took refuge in a Chicago church for a year.
[. . .]
Elvira Arellano, 32, became an activist and a national symbol for illegal immigrant parents by defying her deportation order and speaking out from her sanctuary in the Adalberto United Methodist Church. She announced last week that she was leaving to try to lobby U.S. lawmakers for immigration reform.
[. . .]
“We cannot remain quiet in view of this injustice and must ask for firm action from our authorities,” Mexican Sen. Humberto Zazue said.
[. . .]
“For me it is very important that our government take a strong stand to defend all of us who decide to migrate to another country,” she said. (emphasis added)
Yet Mexican authorities must understand the issue, at least on some level:
…Mexico deports around 200,000 migrants from other Latin American nations annually…
I guess the keyword that is escaping these people is ILLEGAL. One cannot decide to immigrate to another country without that countries permission. Clearly Elvira Arellano did not have that permission, and so was deported. If she wants to come legally, good for her. But she didn’t. Simple.
I wonder if the Mexican Senate could explain why Elvira Arellano should be allowed to break U.S. laws when Mexico routinely deports illegal Central and South American illegals?

Mexico receives the bulk of their income from remittances from the USA. This is pure profit - and it’s larger than any other Mexican industry. It is Mexico.
So if anything gets in the way of their cash cow - Mexico cries foul. The Mexican government even funds the Mexican legal defense fund and others (Maldef, LA RAZA, etc) to use our laws to allow Mexicans to stay in the US - after doing so illegally.
We must stop the flood. Immigration is great. An uncontrolled flood is NOT!!!!
Hello Juan,
Very good points, and I’d like to be clear that, like you, it is illegal immigration that concerns me rather than the legal sort;

Hi Richardson, Most¨”PRO”s do not support Arellano although we do support Comprehensive Immigration Reform. I´ve posted the PRO view on my blog: http://immigrationmexicanamerican.blogspot.com/

Additionally, remittances to MX are down, that may be why the MX politicians are up in arms.
“Investors Business Daily is reporting Illegal Immigration is Down and Mexican Jobs Up. They are also saying the Border Patrol is reporting Illegal immigration apprehensions are down 38% from October ‘06 through June ‘07 because the rate of those coming over the border is down and so many illegal immigrants are leaving. Additionally, remittances are down to only.6% for the first half of 2007 (vs 23% the first half of 2006).”
I live in a small town rt 95 runs straight through it.I want to help some way because the population here,is mixed but I need help.It seems to me that the local police cant do anything about the Mexicans without papers even if they drive drunk without a drivers liscence, insurance or plates. This is absoultly not correct some how!State nor local law enforcement here just pick them up take them to jail then let them go in the morning!I have said company names that hire illegle imangrants because its cheap labor.NO ONE CARES!!!If a person without papers just so happens to get arrested by immagration they let them go too!!If someone picks them up and takes them out of a van.One named Miguel Catillo-vigalomez and Ricardo Morales-Meza they live on Moral street right across from the police station. My name is Jennifer and I am an AMERICAN!!!girl
If we would recognize that Illegal Immigrants are being used “Economic SLAVES” (ie substandard pay and living conditions) then we could deport them for humanitarian reasons.
